This guide has all the information you need about 3 side seal pouches. As the name suggests, these bags are sealed on three sides, with only one opening for filling. Here are some things you need to know about these bags.

A 3-side seal pouch has three sealed sides, one part of which is open for filling. 4 side seal pouches are sealed on all four sides. 3-side-seal bags have a larger packaging capacity than 4-side-seal bags. Since four-side seal pouches are sealed on all four sides, they have a uniform appearance compared to three-side seal pouches. 3-side-seal bags are made from one piece of film, while 4-side-seal bags are made from two pieces of film. 3-side seal pouches can have gussets, while 4-side seal pouches are mostly without gussets.

Compared to 3-side seal pouches, 4-side seal pouches provide better seal strength, vacuum handling and product protection. Compared with 3 side seal pouches, 4 side seal pouches are mainly used for special packaging. Both 3-side seal and 4-side seal pouches are made of similar materials. They all have similar packaging features and benefits.

Our 3-side seal pouches are made from layered thermoplastics that are held together by an adhesive substance such as vinyl acetate. All our materials are carefully selected. Materials must pass a quality assessment before they can be used in the manufacturing process. The selected material has the following qualities:

You can choose up to four film material laminations that best suit your product packaging needs. They include polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aluminum foil, craft paper, polyester (poly), aluminum, nylon, and more. Some of the tiers we offer are:

  • PET/Poly is versatile, but a bit stiff.
  • Kraft/Polyethylene: Provides a very strong bag with high mechanical strength. They are also available in brown, white or black.

You can make 3-side seal pouches using vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) or horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS). You will purchase the machine type according to your product needs.

  • VFFS/HFFS

With VFFS and HFFS machines you can use roll film when making 3-side seal pouches. You load the machine with a roll of film material that is folded down the middle into a roll. The resulting bag is cut to the desired length, then filled with product and sealed on all three sides. Inspections are carried out during production to ensure only perfect bags are used. You may have plain bags or printed bags, for printed bags you will put them in the registration inspection system. This is to avoid cutting the pouch in the graphic pattern area.

You can also add your preferred closure type during fabrication. HFFS is best for solid products like confectionery, while VFFS is ideal for granular products like sugar and liquids. Both are single-use machines that simultaneously make bags, fill them, and seal them. The advantage of using VFFS and HFFS machines is that they use roll film which is less expensive than pre-made bags. Also, they produce multiple sachets at a time.

The 3-side seal pouch is made of thermoplastic material while the 3-side sachet is made of cheesecloth. The three-side seal pouch has strong barrier properties, while the three-side sachet is perforated. Both have two sides sealed and one side open for product filling.

When choosing a machine to make three-side seal pouches, you need to consider the following factors:

1) First determine the type of machine you need, such as VFFS, HFFS, or FS. This will determine the type of bag you want to produce.

2) Second, you need to verify the performance of the machine in relation to its cost. Getting a high-performance machine at a reasonable price is very important. This also affects the general production cost of the bag.

3) Compare machine reviews from different manufacturers, as this will shed light on common problems associated with the machine. Don’t settle for a machine with lots of negative reviews, especially manufacturing flaws.

4) Look for a manufacturer with a long history in bag-making machine production. They tend to have better, more stable technologies that are tested and proven. Additionally, these manufacturers come with a quality warranty and offer a great guarantee against manufacturer defects.

Printing is primarily done on the surface of the three-side seal pouch to convey product details and instructions, and enhance appearance.

1) Gravure printing

Also called gravure printing is a printing method that uses a cylinder with engravings on its surface. Dimples on the surface of the metal cylinder form the design pattern to be transferred to the bag. As the cylinder rotates, it dips into the ink pan, and the depressions in the pattern collect the ink and remove excess ink. A second cylinder; the impression cylinder then moves the object to the gravure cylinder to apply the pattern. After the printing area is complete, it is moved to a drying area before being ejected from the rotogravure press. This process prints in CMYK or Pantone colors depending on your needs. This is an expensive printing option that’s great for high-volume print orders.

2) Digital printing

This involves printing digital images or text directly onto the surface of plastic, paper, fabric, etc. The image to be printed is sent to the digital printing press as a digital file in PDF format. The artwork to be printed is created digitally using computer software, thus eliminating several steps present in traditional printing methods. Digital printing presses print images or text in cyan, magenta, black, and yellow (CMYK) colors. Digital printing options are cost-effective, faster, ideal for small orders, and leave a crisp, high-quality finish.

3) Flexographic printing

This is almost similar to the rotogravure method but uses a flexible plate instead of an engraved cylinder. The flexible sheet is wrapped around a rotating cylinder with patterns in the raised areas. The raised portion is then painted with a color on each cylinder, which is then pressed against the surface of the bag to transfer the image. This printing option is less expensive than the gravure printing method and works well on plastic surfaces. It’s also great for printing large orders.

The type of finish on the three-side seal pouch depends on the effect you want to achieve. There are two finish options such as matte and glossy.

1) Matt finish

A matte finish is a smooth, dull yet refined finish that exudes a level of professionalism. They have no shine and therefore do not have a blinding effect on the consumer, especially in sunlight. They provide an excellent printing surface for images and text, making it easier to read fonts on matte bags. The downside to using matte finishes is that they tend to get dull, which makes the graphics dull as well. Also, they are more expensive than glossy finishes.

2) Glossy surface

Unlike matte finishes, glossy finishes are shiny, high-profile and slightly textured on the outside of the pouch. They’re highly water-resistant, attractive, and easily stand out on the shelf. A glossy finish is recommended if you plan to decorate your 3 side seal pouches with colorful artwork. That’s because a glossy background will enhance your prints, making their images brighter and of higher quality. Also, they are great when introducing new products to the market as they are easy to attract customers.

High-quality materials are used to achieve a glossy look, so your product remains safe and enhanced against environmental elements. The downside to using glossy finishes is that they tend to shine, making it difficult to read instructions. They’re also prone to fingerprint smudges, and they’re expensive.

You can manually or machine fill the 3 side seal pouches depending on the volume of the product. Small batches can be filled by hand, while larger batches are filled by machine. Machine filling is automated and can be done at specific times or in a continuous process. To manually fill your product, you will need to measure the container to ensure the uniformity of the packaged product. The container can be a spoon or a jug, depending on the state of the product, such as liquid, powder or solid. Once the bag is filled, you can follow the closing method or manually seal it with a heat sealer.

Heat sealers apply heat when sealing bags and can be used in small batches or provide automation for larger factories. The filling machine uses a conveyor belt to transport the prepared pouches to the filling area of the machine. These machines have special funnels or pumps that direct the product into bags. When using an automated machine, the pouches can be vacuum sealed by sucking the air out of the pouch. Once the bags are filled, they are moved to the sealing area to remove excess air and the bags are sealed accordingly. Machine filling is faster and more accurate than manual filling.

The cost of a three-side seal pouch depends on the configuration of the bag, such as size, printing, accessories, etc. Regular 3-side seal pouches are cheap compared to custom-made ones. This is because customization is time-consuming and labor-intensive.

1) Seal Integrity Test

The integrity of the seal is tested by subjecting the pouch to a uniform pressure flow and observing the sealing behavior. Stronger seals maintain pressure flow longer than weaker seals that rupture after a short time.

2) Barrier test

You can also perform barrier tests on bags such as oxygen permeability, moisture permeability, etc. A special machine is used to check that the oxygen transmission rate is within limits. Higher oxygen transmission confirms a poorer barrier to oxygen. The same applies to the moisture transfer rate. When the moisture content in the bag exceeds the required threshold, the bag cannot maintain the freshness of the product for a long time. Both oxygen and moisture are catalysts for product spoilage as they promote oxidation and pouring conditions.

Defects are deformities that may occur during the manufacturing process or handling of 3-side sealed bags. Some common pitfalls are:

1) Wear and tear

Abrasion is the wear and tear of the pouch layers, which can be caused by machinery or improper handling during production. If it’s a minor scratch on the outside of the bag, it probably won’t affect the product. However, the bag cannot be used if the area of wear extends beyond the outer layer.

2) Leakage sealing machine

A leaking seal is an incomplete seal with little room for the product to leak. If this defect is not detected early, it may result in a huge loss of product due to leakage.

3) Blisters

This is a raised area that looks like a hollow swelling and is common with seals.

4) Layering

This is the separation of individual layers of material that are bonded together. If it doesn’t extend to the seal, it will affect the appearance of the bag rather than the contents.

5) String seal

Filament seals have thread-like material on the edges due to uneven cutting of the edges.

6) Swelling seal

Occurs due to excess air in the sealed area or microbial disturbances such as bacterial infestation.

7) Contaminated seal

Contaminated seals have unwanted material embedded in them. Product integrity may be compromised.

8) Bending seal

A bent seal does not line up with the edge of the 3-sided seal bag.

9) Cracks

Cracks are small tears that usually appear in the foil layer of 3-sided sealed bags.

10) Ironing wrinkles

This is the deformation caused by the heating of the three-side sealed bag during the sealing process. This is an unwanted fold caused by bending in the sealing area.

11) Wrinkles

There are creases on the 3 side seal pouch due to shrinkage causing the seal to fold unevenly.
